Why have a website

Nearly every business has a website these days. Almost 100,000 new website go live each day. I know that is a lot. but most of them don’t know why they need a website or how to use it effectively for their businesses.

To make your website work for you and give you  a good ROI you need a plan and a clearly identified goal.

These are the main point to consider before getting a website for your business.

  • what is your target market
  • What will the website do for your business
  • How will it help your existing customers
  • What is the main purpose (generate leads, sell online, support your existing customers, inform the prospect)
  • How will you accomplish the above tasks on your website?

In this day and age the Internet is the first point of getting information, buying, hiring etc. Think about this. How many of us look in the phone book or yellow pages or go to the library to get info, buy or hire some one first step? We may check online then go to the shop to buy or may even buy online.

so whatever product or service you are selling, ask those questions first before getting your website done.

I have just scratched the surface here.  Once it is up you need to test and track and tweak as you go to get maximum results.

It is not that hard to do that if you have a website with Content Management System installed. You can update and edit your site whenever you want.

Do I have to be a local designer?

I see a lot of searches in my stats with names of cities other than where I live (wellington). I have local clients and clients all over New Zealand.

With email and skype or phone it is so easy to get what you want these days. I have not met most of my customers face-to-face. They usually find me on Google and email me what thery want. I reply to them within a day. Then :-

  • We narrow down the specs
  • I give a quote
  • They tell me if they are happy or not
  • I request them to work on the content and images etc
  • I start work on the look and feel
  • I train them to use the CMS
  • They start using the CMS to tweak copy and images

This process is so easy as they get access to the website on my server at once. All they do is log in and make changes. I also teach them to FTP files. They upload the images or PDF documents. How easy is that?

So yeah I do not have to be local to design your website and get it up and running!

Updating your business website

How often to update a business website was one of the searches on my blog stats today.

A very good question.
If you are a small business update the site as often as you can. It can be twice a week or more. Definetely 3-4 times a month. Search engines love fresh good content. You will get more Google love. Write good relevant keyword rich articles or blog posts for the humans. (No keyword stuffing).

For example if you are a rug seller write about the different kinds of rugs, where they come from, the differences between machine and hand knotted. Ways to repair and clean rugs etc. all this information will be crawled by search engines. When people search for information your blog posts or articles will come up on the first page. Over a period of time you will have regular readers or imformation seekers who will become your customers or even one time visitors will become your customer.

To do this you need to have a way of updating your site and keeping it fresh. I can help you do that by revamping your existing site or build you a new site with a content management system in place.

I will train you to update your site. CMS is quite easy to use and has Word like dashboard. You can easily add artciles images etc.  It does not take much time. You can do even if you are travelling. You can update it from anywhere as the files sit on the server and you can access it easily

Contact me for a free quote. No matter what the size of your website I can install content management system for you.

Small Business websites

As a small business myself I know how important it is to have a website that is targeted at your customers.

How many of you small business owners know

  1. Where your traffic is coming from
  2. How they are searching for you ? (keyphrase or keyword)
  3. Who is refering the visitor
  4. Which search engine sent you the traffic?

If you do not know any of the above you are leaving money on the table. This is like the pulse of your website. the more you know about the traffic the better you will be in a position to tweak it for conversion.

Some of my customers are so on top of this and are tweaking theirs sites almost every week or more.

The reason being when I set up their websites with the content management system I install Google analytics or another plugin that gives them detailed stats. I also train them to look for the goldmine in their stats.

This helps them refine the content for their traffic.

But if you have a static website and have no easy access to update how will you be able to do the above?

Increase your traffic by tweaking your content to suit your target market with my website packages.

Easy to update websites

I realised this morning I have not posted for a while. The reason being – busy building websites and driving traffic to my own sites.

A friend of mine is starting a business. She is not very computer lierate and is not very comfortable using computers.  She came to me and said “  I am starting this business. It needs a website.  I don’t even know how to send an email though”. ( She had just bought her first computer that day).

My reply was “Not a problem. I will get you a simple website that will be a marketing tool for you. I will also teach you how to update your site. You can even have a blog on your site if you want to. ”

I installed wordpress on site and am in the process of building the site. I will give a manual that will walk her through the steps in a simple manner with lots of screenshots. I will train her over the phone as well. I am very confident she will be updating her site in no time!

The reason being Worpress is so easy to use.I have trained people who knew only to switch on their computers. I have met many small business owners who get penalised by Google as nothing has been done to the website in the past 8-10 years.

  • Are you a small business with an outdated website?

Wordpress as CMS for businesses…

There is a lot of searches for the keywords in my title. Yes I see them at least twice a week on my blog stats.

I suddenly realized the power of that plug in. It tells you where your visitor came from, what link they clicked and what keyword they used to find you! What else do you need?

If you are a small business you need to keep your content updated and fresh to make Google happy. Here is a list of things to do to make Google happy

  • More than one page. More like 5-7 pages(the more the better).
  • Unique content.
  • Fresh content added on the site regularly.
  • Adding content regularly helps websites rank well in the search engines and in turn improves your PPC quality score.
  • The content needs to be written for humans but also optimized for certain keywords.
  • A website with a blog. Google loves blogs. Google has a separate search facility just for blogs. www.blogsearch.google.com
  • People read posts and leave comments. This helps your website rank better for relevant keywords.
  • Readers will subscribe to your feeds. (Feeds are like newsletters).
  • Other blogs will link to your posts. Inbound links is loved by Google.
  • A good Goggle compliant xml sitemap.
  • Each page optimized for titles, headers and sub headers. (Helps Google find you easier
  • Each page optimized with tags – These are like signposts for search engines.
  • Privacy, disclosure policy at the bottom

Wordpress as a CMS for business does all the above. I can provide a website that is compliant with all the above points. contact me for more information.

Web 2.0

Yesterday I wrote about the power of content management system and how important it is to your business. It is not some fancy tool I am trying to sell to you.

It is a tool that can be used to enhance and increase your business activity. It is also the way Internet is changing and becoming something new. Most CMS packages are Web.2.0 friendly.

What is web 2.0?

Web 2.0 is all about how you communicate to the audience about your business and how you engage them through your website, your presence in social media sites, how you brand yourself online etc. It is group, community interaction.

CMS gives you the edge to do all the above efficiently. The old static brochure website will probably be around another 5 years max. I already see fewer of them around. The early adapters will always have the edge and march forward with more visitors and conversions.

I have personally experienced this with my own website Pixels. Since the day I shifted to a CMS and did the social media rounds and got talked about or noticed, I saw a spike in traffic and a gradual climb in the search engine placement. That means more traffic and more customers for me.

Blogs are very powerful. It is a channel where you can talk about your business, your niche. It is like a whiteboard where you can write how good your products are. If you blog regularly and talk to your target market about the problems they face and how your product solves it easily, you have their ears. Blogs are also like mini press releases sent out regularly. The information is picked up by other websites, blogs and discussed and talked about.

What better publicity can you  get for free?

Web 2.0 is not only about white space big fonts and bright colors. It is all about interacting with your online target market and how you are able to catch their attention and retain it.
Especially at a time like now when recession is going on all over the world you have to find new ways of acquiring customers.
It could be the time to revamp your website work out a strategy for online marketing, and go the Web 2.0 way. Big corporations like Dell, Comcast are doing it. As a small business it is very beneficial to have a strong online presence. What better way to advertise with minimum cost?
Web 2.0 way is easy to go with a content management system in place. Contact me to find out more about CMS

Content Management System

If you are a small business and you don’t have a website, you are leaving money on the table. I deal with small businesses everyday.

The ones that do very well are the ones that update their websites often and keep the content fresh.
These days customers expect you to have a very informative website. To be out there in front of your target market you need to interact and find ways of getting their attention.

What better way than to post articles that are useful to your prospects?
For example if you deal in home furnishings, you can have articles on:

  • “How to smarten up your bedroom for under $300”
  • “Change the look of your lounge for under$100”
  • “Gift ideas for holidays for under $100”
  • Or tips on how to match colors for walls, curtains/blinds furniture etc.
  • Tips on cleaning rugs to make them look like new.

Put out a newsletter once a quarter for your existing customers about specials upcoming sales and ideas for gifts or room makeovers.

  • You can even ask your customers to send you before & after photos.
  • You can run a competition and offer gift vouchers etc.
  • You can have opinion polls about specific products.
  • A green section where customers can enter ideas.

You can think up many more ways to interact and have this ongoing dialogue. This helps you in two ways:

  1. You will know what your customers want/like.
  2. You will build a long term relationship with your customers and they will trust you more.

To do all the above things you need to keep updating your website regularly and not depend on your web designer. The way to do this is to have a content management system for your website. This will save you money and time in the long term.

You definitely need this if you are selling online. You can update your catalog every day if you have to.

When business is down

Reading the news has become a chore for me these days. Who wants to read the doom & gloom? It is everywhere – markets down, dollar falling, foreclosures. Yes it is hard. But for those of us who keep looking for opportunities, It is always there. We just have to use a bit of imagination and get creative. Here are some tips to survive the downturn.

  1. If you have a website and you sell products online you have a pricing advantage from a brick & mortar business.
  2. Use that advantage and pass on some savings to your customers. Give a discount and display it prominently on your site.
  3. If you are a small business pay attention to your website. Make changes or a completely revamp your website to increase your customer numbers. Create a blog on your site and write about your products regularly.
  4. Ramp up your online marketing efforts.
  5. Try to get noticed with some creativity.
  6. Experiment with new ways of marketing. Find out which one is most effective.

Contact me for a CMS based website. You can make your own updates and keep the content fresh, you can also interact with your customers proactively and grow your business. For a short period I am giving a discount (practising what I am preaching here).
